Psychology Glossary
My field of study is the psychology. In psychology, you treat and do research about the brain, his features and the well-being mental of people. It has different approaches in psychology and each psychologist have their preference for one and treat their patient in function of these approaches. It has particular words in psychology to talk about the mental disorders, approaches, brain structure, troubles and more, to help anyone, here is a glossary of some of these words.
- psychoanalysis
- A set of theories who put the emphasis on conscious and unconscious processes.
- bipolar disorder
- An affective disorder alternating between periods of mania and periods of depression.
- dissociative disorders
- An emotional disorder where the person have multiple personalities.
- schizophrenia
- A mental disorder characterized by some features, like emotional blunting, intellectual deterioration, social isolation, disorganized speech and behavior, desillusions and hallucinations.
- amnesia
- A partial or complete loss of memory caused by brain injury or trauma.
- behaviorism
- The theory who study psychology with the examination of observable and quantifiable events, in contrast with subjective mental states.
- cognitive
- Who concerns mental processes, like memory, judgment and reasoning.
- unconscious
- A part of mind rarely accessible who contains psychic material.
- suppression
- The conscious fact of avoid what is unpleasant.
- neurosis
- A personality disorder where it has excessive anxiety, indecision and a social maladjustment.
- paradoxical sleep
- A part of the sleep characterized by rapid eye movements, heavier breathing and brain wave pattern similar of during the wakeful.
- mental health
- The field of medicine who touch the well-being and adjustment in society.
- consciousness
- The mental activity where a person is aware of is acts.
- myelin sheath
- A wrapping around nerve axons, it’s like an electrical insulator permit to nerve impulses to go to muscles and effectors.
- neurotransmitter
- Chemical substances who transmit nerve impulses in the body.
- panic attack
- An attack of anxiety characterized by physical symptoms, like sweating and trembling.
- psychotropic
- A drug, tranquilizer or sedative, or antidepressant, this alter the mental activity.
- biological clock
- An innate mechanism of the body who is in charge of the rhythm of life, like sleeping and waking.
- brainstem
- A part of the brain who is responsible of reflexes and internal mechanisms, like respiration and heartbeat,
- cerebellum
- A big part of the brain who serve to voluntary movements, posture and balance.
